Blue Hen Investment Club

President

Healthcare Sector Head, Healthcare Analyst

As the President of the Blue Hen Investment Club, I am privileged to lead a student-managed long-only equity fund with a portfolio of approximately $4 million dollars and fifty-four students at the University of Delaware. Our club, which was founded in 1996 with an initial seed investment of $500,000, has achieved tremendous growth without additional capital injections and has become one of the leading investment clubs in the region.

Our club has a competitive application and interview process, accepting only the top 5%-10% of applicants, and consists of eight sectors and a four-member executive board. Our mission is to provide students with real-world experience in managing a portfolio while teaching them fundamental and advanced concepts in equity research, valuation, and portfolio management.

As President, my role encompasses developing strategic goals for the fund. Our primary objective is to outperform the S&P 500 on a risk-adjusted basis. To accomplish this, I have implemented various initiatives that have enhanced our portfolio's performance.

I created a new discounted cash flow model template that incorporates more in-depth pro forma financial statement assumptions. This has allowed for greater clarity and understanding of a target company's value, which has translated into superior investment decisions. Additionally, I review and screen deliverables such as DCFs, Residual Income Models, pitch decks, and research reports for errors and provide guidance to enhance the clarity, accuracy, and relevance of presentation materials.

Instructing a comprehensive accounting and valuation course for new members and providing weekly sessions to enhance technical capabilities for the entire organization are other vital aspects of my role. This has created a culture of continuous learning and improvement, which has been instrumental in our club's success.

As the President of the Blue Hen Investment Club, I have developed essential leadership, communication, and analytical skills while contributing significantly to the University of Delaware's investment community. I am proud to have the opportunity to lead and work alongside such talented individuals and hope to leave a lasting impact on the organization.

Prior to becoming President, I held positions as a healthcare sector analyst and the healthcare sector head. As healthcare sector head, I managed our sector's allocation of the portfolio, roughly $600,000, and aimed to outperform the S&P 500 and our sector ETF, XLV. I conducted weekly meetings to build portfolio strategy, generated buy target recommendations, and discussed current events and policy matters. I also constructed and edited learning materials, equity research reports, valuation models, and slide decks, and helped new analysts develop their quantitative and healthcare-specific knowledge, market knowledge, company analysis, and valuation techniques. Our sector successfully outperformed the sector ETF during my tenure.
